Sabah draws up by-law to boost local authorities' revenue

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has formulated a new by-law to boost the revenue of local authorities, said Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

He said a roadshow would be organised to inform local authorities about the by-law, which is being gazetted.

"This is one of the efforts being implemented at the ministry level," he said at the Excellent Service Award 2022 ceremony on Friday.

Dr Joachim, who is also state local government and housing minister, urged local authorities to find new sources of revenue and increase their collection of assessment fees, licence fees, rentals and arrears.

"The ministry is open to discussions on improving the management of local authorities."

He reminded local authorities to fulfil the duties and responsibilities entrusted to them.

He said complaints lodged against them by the public would be investigated thoroughly before any action would be taken.

At the Kaamatan event in Ranau today, Dr Joachim urged the people to take advantage of the political stability in the state and country to improve their socioeconomic status.

He encouraged landowners to actively cultivate their land with commercial crops and local products.

As deputy president of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association, Dr Joachim said the festival provided a platform to promote the diverse ethnicities in the state.
