Amendment allowing citizenship for kids born to Malaysian mums overseas to be presented to Rulers in July

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed amendment to Part III of the Federal Constitution allowing children born to Malaysian mothers abroad to obtain Malaysian citizenship will be presented to the Conference of Rulers on July 12, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said, should the proposed amendment be approved by the Conference of Rulers, the bill for the amendment will be tabled in Dewan Rakyat during the year-end sitting.

"We are currently preparing the proposed amendment to Part III of the Federal Constitution regarding citizenship matters and we are doing this comprehensively.

"It is not just about children born to Malaysian mothers abroad to foreign partners, but also comprehensive amendments that contain at least eight proposed amendments," he said during the winding-up of the Annual Report of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) in the lower house.

He added that the engagement session regarding the proposed amendment was at the final stage.

"InsyaAllah, it will be presented to the Conference of Rulers on July 12. If everything goes as planned and (it is) approved by the Conference of Rulers, we will then present in the Dewan Rakyat during the year-end sitting."
