Baby elephant naming campaign aims to raise awareness of wildlife protection in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park here has welcomed three new baby elephants, though they have yet to be named.

In light of this, the park is launching a baby elephant naming campaign in conjunction with World Elephant Day on Aug 12.

Park curator Maryati Abdullah Lakim said one female elephant had given birth at the end of last year while two other baby elephants more were born this year.

Currently, the park has one male and two female baby elephants, along with eight adult males and five adult females.

Maryati said the purpose of the naming campaign is to encourage public participation while raising awareness of wildlife protection in Sabah.

The campaign, jointly organised with Borneo Behavior Solution (BBS), is intended to aligns with this year's World Elephant Day theme "Protecting Elephant Habitats for a Sustainable Tomorrow".

It will run from July 10 to Aug 8 via the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park Facebook page.

Participation is open to all and the three winners will be announced within a week of the campaign's conclusion on Aug 9.

Through the campaign, the park also hopes to increase following on its Facebook page, where it shares its educational programmes, conservation efforts and awareness videos.

Meanwhile, Borneo Behavior Solution (BBS) manager Kenneth Maluda said the company would continue to assist the state Wildlife Department in ensuring the success of every programme implemented at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park.

"We truly hope that this campaign receives a favourable response from the public because it is more than just a campaign to name baby elephants," he added.
