Kelantan Wildlife gets additional rangers to help with tiger, elephant cases

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department has received five more rangers to assist in handling tiger and elephant cases.

The department's director Mohamad Hafid Rohan said the additional manpower who were from its headquarters, arrived in the state last month.

He said they have been deployed to Gua Musang to assist the existing rangers who have been sent to the district since early last month.

He added the additional rangers were needed following the series of tiger attacks and elephant rampages reported in the district.

"The department has eight rangers for the task and the number is not enough to handle all the cases and also to monitor the eight traps that we have set up to catch the animals particularly the tigers.

"The last report that we received about a tiger roaming was in a village in Kuala Krai and we have sent our rangers to check on it recently," he said.

Asked on the development of the cases where tigers mauled three people in Gua Musang, he said the department was still monitoring the areas.

"The eight traps set up include the place where the three victims were killed and our rangers have been checking on the traps regularly," he added.

Three men including two foreigners were mauled by tigers in separate incidents in Gua Musang last month.
