'Abduction' attempt: E-hailing driver a hearing-impaired person, say police

SHAH ALAM: The e-hailing driver, who was suspected of trying to abduct a woman here yesterday, turned out to be a differently-abled person.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police investigation found that the 26-year-old man, who was driving a Perodua Axia, has hearing disability.

"He started working as e-hailing driver since September 26 and the complainant was his third customer on the day of the incident.

"He explained that he had gone the wrong way as he was new to the job. He tried to make a U-turn at Jalan Temasya, Glenmarie when the complainant suddenly opened the car door and jumped out.

"He then continued on with his journey as there was a request from another customer," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Iqbal said, based on the victim's report, she made a reservation at 9.30am on Sept 27 for the driver to fetch her at the Glenmarie LRT station.

During the incident, the complainant sat in the rear passenger seat and asked the driver if she could make a cash payment but received no reply.

The complainant said she noticed that the suspect often looked at her through the rear view mirror.

"Worried about her safety, she got out of the car while the vehicle was slowing down. The complainant was unhurt," he said.

Mohd Iqbal said the case, deemed as a misunderstanding, has been classified as No Further Action (NFA).

He added that the complainant has also withdrawn the police report she made earlier after being explained about the situation.

Yesterday, it was reported that a woman was forced to jump out of a moving car after making an escape from a suspected abduction attempt by an e-hailing driver.

Catering operator, Ayuni Dean, 44, said the incident happened last Wednesday when her employee was on her way to an event in Glenmarie, here.

Ayuni said her employee called her for help after jumping out of the car.
