Flash flood inundates six villages in Gurun

KUALA MUDA: Twenty-one houses in six villages in Gurun were inundated by flash floods following continuous heavy rain yesterday evening.

Kuala Muda Malaysia Civil Defence officer Azahar Ahmad reported that six villages were affected, namely Kampung Sungai Kunyit, Kampung Sungai Badak, Kampung Jelatang, Kampung Belakang Mahkamah Gurun, Kampung Pekan Atap, and Kampung Ladang Hock Kim.

He said the deluge affected 74 flood victims from 21 families, who have been advised to evacuate to Temporary Flood Relief Centres (PPS) should conditions worsen.

"The flash flood occurred after heavy rain persisted in Gurun for two hours from 10.25pm yesterday.

"The water levels rose to 0.3 metres to 0.5 metres affecting houses situated in low-lying areas or near rivers.

"The incident has resulted in property damage to the victims," he said in a statement today.

Azahar said that the situation is under control as weather conditions have improved.

"Cleaning operations for the affected houses are in progress. No injuries have been reported, and flood water levels have receded," he added.
