Beyond the Headlines: Najib and son owe billions in taxes, MYAirline fiasco & unpacking 2024 Budget [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: In the latest episode of Beyond the Headlines, the team dived into the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) move to proceed with its case to recover over RM1.7 billion in unpaid taxes from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son, Nazifuddin, following the recent Federal Court judgement that they have to pay up.

This came after the federal court dismissed the duo's appeal to quash the high court's decision for both Najib and his son to settle RM1.69 billion and RM37.6 million respectively on grounds that the 'pay first, talk later' principle remains.

The week also saw a contentious period for Malaysian aviation in the form of MYAirline Sdn Bhd's sudden suspension of its operations, causing a lot of panic among its ticket holders. Follow the discussion for a rapid rundown behind the whole fiasco.

Also being discussed was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Riyadh for the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit. Anwar said urgent actions must be expedited to end Israel's illegal occupation following the West's hypocritical acts towards the conflict.

Joining the discussion to help unpack the 2024 Budget is Professor Geoffrey Williams, an economic expert from the Malaysia University of Science and Technology. He lauded the budget presented by the government to be the best in the last 20 years as allocations were aimed to take Malaysia out of its RM1.39 trillion debt.
