Proactive planning: Insights on preventing future landslides in Batang Kali

KUALA LUMPUR: SJKC Mun Choong's former Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) head, U Chin Ong has called for proactive measures to prevent future landslides in the Batang Kali area.

In the wake of the recent landslide incident in Batang Kali, U has offered valuable insights into the incident and shared his perspective on the preventive actions required to avert similar occurrences in the future.

U emphasised the importance of proactivity and comprehensive preventive planning, stating; "If every party is proactive and has a preventive plan, I think the landslide will not happen again."

He believes that with the collective efforts of all concerned parties, such incidents could be avoided.

However, when asked about his satisfaction with a specific report related to the incident, U declined to comment, citing his lack of technical expertise to understand the report's intricacies.

U stressed the need for relevant departments to actively monitor and report on slope conditions regularly, ideally on a monthly basis.

He suggested that these reports be made accessible to the public, possibly through website uploads, to enable the public to independently assess slope safety for activities like camping.

Furthermore, U underscored the importance of relevant departments remaining vigilant and responsive to any signs of slope movement.

He said: "Relevant departments should always be vigilant about any (soil) movement and also ensure that drainage and irrigation systems are in order."

This proactive approach, he believes, can significantly reduce the risks associated with landslides.

U emphasised that safety should be the top priority for all stakeholders to ensure the well-being of communities residing in areas prone to natural disasters.
