No bikinis in city centre, says Sabah Tourism minister

KOTA KINABALU: Tourists are reminded to observe the local sensitivity, particularly regarding the dress code.

Since yesterday, photos of a woman wearing a bikini walking around the city while pulling her gigantic bag have gone viral.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew said those photos were taken about a month ago.

"Kota Kinabalu is considered an island town because of its proximity to islands, namely the Tunku Abdul Rahman Parks, Sepanggar and the Tanjung Aru Beach.

"However, I am sure that unlike other beach destinations, one can notice that the wandering population in the city centre is not dressed in beach attire all around," she said in a statement.

Liew, who is also Api Api assemblyman, said that the city centre was still for business dwellers with a mix of tourists.

Through the Sabah Tourism Board, Liew said travellers were often reminded of the dress code and customary practices.

"Nevertheless, travellers should also be mindful of the customs and traditions of the destination they are visiting."

On another similar incident here, Liew also said it had also come to the ministry's attention that several distasteful photos had been taken by the Sabah Tourism Board building.

"It is disheartening to know that there is such malicious intention.

"We are investigating the authenticity of the account and image.

"Nevertheless, we seek your consideration to report the image and account if you happen to come across it to minimise any other occurrence."
