Monarch's reflection: The significance of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong

KUALA LUMPUR: Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah underscored the profound significance of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He emphasised that it is not merely symbolic but also functions as a guardian of democratic principles, a cornerstone of national security, and a unifying force for the people.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong said the institution possesses a spirit and essence as the country's ultimate check and balance instrument capable of using wisdom to deliver a final verdict when the nation encounters an impasse.

The Malay rulers collectively, he added, were akin to "an umbrella" to protect the people and serve as a shield to safeguard the nation's prosperity and well-being.

"The strength that flows within me reflects the sovereignty of all Malay Rulers," he said on today's second day of the 242nd Conference of Rulers' meeting.

The meeting took place on Oct 25 and 26 at the Istana Negara and was chaired by the Sultan of Johor.

Among those present at the meeting were the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah; Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin; Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah; and the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

Pahang was represented by the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah; Perlis by the Regent of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail; and Kelantan by the Crown Prince of Kelantan, Tengku Dr Muhammad Faiz Petra.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also present.
