Police arrest two men for threatening PM and IGP on Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed the arrest of two men following social media postings that had elements of criminal threats against the Prime Minister and Inspector-General of Police.

In separate arrests, the man believed to be the owner of the Facebook account 'Nekad Hikers Ventures' aged around 51 years, was first apprehended by police yesterday (Oct 27), in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

Meanwhile, the second arrest was made in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, also yesterday, of a 27-year-old believed to be the owner of Facebook account, 'Jgad Zruu'.

The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code, which pertains to the offence of criminal intimidation by anonymous communication, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which concerns the improper use of network facilities and other related matters.

The case is still under investigation and police advised the public not to engage in speculations that could disrupt the investigation.

The police also reminded the public to be responsible and considerate users of social media, especially when it comes to sensitive issues involving public disorder and national security.
