KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's iconic KL Tower was lit up with a special illumination of the colours of Turkiye's national flag in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkiye last night (October 29).

The KL Tower, known as the tallest telecommunications tower in Southeast Asia and the seventh tallest in the world, was adorned with red and white lights in honour of Turkiye's struggle for independence.

Turkiye Ambassador to Malaysia, Emir Salim Yuksel, in his speech to mark the special the occasion, said 100 years ago, the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye proclaimed the Republic after long years of war and the nation reached its ultimate goal of peace and prosperity.

"Since that glorious day, October 29, 1923, a hundred years has passed and now Turkiye is amongst the most advanced nations on earth with a population of 85 million people," he said.

"After a hundred years of that day, today (yesterday), we are amongst friends, brothers and sisters in this beautiful city of Kuala Lumpur," he added.

Yuksel noted that the special display, which started from 8pm to 9pm, was a show of solidarity at this greatest moment and a clear indication of the special bonds between Turkiye and Malaysia.

"On this occasion, I remember with gratitude and respect the founding father of our Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and his fellow soldiers and friends, and our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the victory on the War of Independence and the foundation of our Republic," said Yuksel. --BERNAMA
