PM hopes for more investments from China in Tg Malim

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia hopes to see more investments from China in Tanjung Malim, Perak, as it strives to be the biggest automotive city in the region.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he hoped to see an increased production target from 500,000 vehicles per year.

"China's vice president (Han Zheng) is expected to arrive in Malaysia in a few days.

"I have arranged a visit to Tanjung Malim (in hopes) to increase investments from the previously announced production target of half million vehicles," he said at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly today.

Proton's Tanjung Malim plant, which opened in  2004, was designed with a capacity of up to a million cars per year.

It was reported that Geely, which is partnered with Proton, would kick off an investment worth USD10 billion (RM45 billion) to turn Tanjong Malim into the region's largest auto city.

DRB-HICOM Bhd and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely Holding) had last month signed a Master Collaboration Agreement (MCA) for the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjung Malim, setting forth the underlying principles, governance framework and mutual commitment of project.
