Worker seriously injured, 12 others exposed to ammonia gas at Sandakan ice factory

SANDAKAN: A factory worker was seriously injured, while 12 others suffered symptoms such as shortness of breath, eye and skin irritation after being exposed to ammonia following a gas leak at an ice factory here this morning.

According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, the incident occurred at around 10am today at Sinaran Ice Factory in Batu 3, here.

A team of 13 officers and personnel from the Sandakan Fire Station were dispatched to the location which was about one kilometre from the scene of the incident.

"The victims comprised nine men and four women who were given initial treatment at the location before being sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital," said the department via a media statement.

"Firefighters helped to remove victims trapped in the building before decontaminating and sanitizing the entire area," the statement added.

The operation ended at 12.06pm after clearing works were completed. – Bernama
