18 victims of Shah Alam factory gas leak in stable condition

CYBERJAYA: The 18 people who were hospitalised after an ammonia gas leak at a factory in Shah Alam are in stable condition, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

The victims, all employees of the factory, are being treated at three different hospitals in Klang, Shah Alam, and Sungai Buloh.

"Fourteen of them suffered mild symptoms and can be given outpatient treatment," Dzulkefly told reporters on the sidelines of World Cancer Day celebrations at Universtiti Cyberjaya here today.

"Four others including two pregnant women have been warded for observation," he said, adding no one required intensive care.

Yesterday morning's incident happened after a forklift collided with a valve of an ammonia tank a the factory.

The valve was later shut off by the Fire and Rescue Department's hazmat (hazardous materials) team.

Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim was reported as saying that a total of 33 people suffered breathing difficulties after the leak.
