Nik Nazmi: Two crucial flood mitigation projects underway in Dengkil

SEPANG: The government will carry out two high priority Flood Mitigation Projects (RTB) worth RM725.7 million with the aim of resolving flood issues in Dengkil town up to Labohan Dagang.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the Sungai Langat Phase 1 and 2 RTB projects are under the High Priority Flood Mitigation list.

"At the moment, the land acquisition process is on-going for the Sungai Langat Phase 1 RTB project and is expected to be completed in 2027.

"The Sungai Langat Phase 2 RTB project is set to begin in January next year and will be fully completed in 2030," he said, adding that the frequency of drainage system maintenance in the area will be heightened as a short term measure.

Nik Nazmi said the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) wants developers to adhere to all development approvals linked to the Urban Storm Water Management components.

Such compliance, he said, was vital as the flood occurrences at Jalan Utama Taman Warisan Suria and Persimpangan FT29/FT32 since Nov 5 was due to silt water.

"It was caused by a huge amount of silt water from upstream development areas which caused an overflow from Sungai Kelinsing," he added.

He said this after a work visit to villages affected by floods near the Sungai Langat river in the Dengkil sub-district here.

Among the affected villages include Kampung Sungai Buah, Kampung Jenderam Hilir, Kampung Cemperai, Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Melut as well as the Ayamas Sdn Bhd quarters at Jalan Utama, Taman Warisan Suria.

Flood waters measuring 0.2m to 0.5m had inundated 148 homes while 395 residents have been evacuated to a flood relief centre.

Nik Nazmi said continuous heavy rain for over an hour with a record reading of 108mm at the upstream areas of Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Langat had caused waters at Sungai Langat to rise to 12.21m.

"It had crossed the 11m dangerous level on 5.30am the same day (Nov 5).

"The floods worsened after waters at Sungai Parit Tampoi in the area of Kampung Cemperai overflowed due to strong currents.

"The project to upgrade the Sungai Parit Tampoi bund will be completed under the RTB project through a RM9 million fund by the Selangor state government. It is set to be completed on June 12,2025," he said.

The internal drainage system which was unable to cope with the large amount of water and its unmaintained state had contributed to flood incidences in the area, he added.

"As a quick action to reduce the impact, the Selangor DID has placed two mobile pumps in Kampung Seri Tanjung and Taman Delima to get rid of water from flooded areas.

"Immediate works to repair broken bunds were also done by the contractors under the RTB project," he said.
