Kelantan mufti reminds public to refrain from commenting on Kelantan syariah law challenge

KOTA BARU: The public has been reminded to refrain from making comments on the constitutional challenge to Kelantan syariah law filed by a mother-daughter duo as the case is still on-going.

Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad, however, said they can pray for the positive result from the case.

"We should not comment on whatever cases that are still on-going or that the court has yet to decide on.

"But we can always pray to Allah for a positive result," he said.

He said the public can also hope that the court decision would be good for Islam.

The constitutional challenge was initiated by lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and her daughter, Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman on May 25, 2022.

They utilised Article 4(4) of the Federal Constitution to directly approach the Federal Court, listing the Kelantan state government as the respondent.

They are disputing 18 provisions under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019, saying they were unconstitutional.

On Monday, the Federal Court, after hearing submissions from all parties involved, reserved judgement and will later set a date to deliver its verdict over the petition.
