Terengganu flood disaster will not affect SPM practical tests, says education department

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state Education Department has confirmed that no school laboratories were inundated in the flood although several schools were closed due to the disaster.

The department's School Management Sector deputy director Azman Othman @ Abdullah said as an early preparation for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, the administration at schools have already begun downloading the Science Practical Test materials.

He said the Science Practical Test involving 5,301 candidates will be conducted over three days starting from Dec 5.

"The Terengganu Education Department prepared 138 examination centres involving 1,034 invigilators. Schools affected by flood-related closures still have time to prepare, especially in downloading the Science Practical Test materials," he said when contacted by Berita Harian today.

When commenting further, Azman, who is performing the duties of the state Education director, said schools affected by flood-related closures have until the end of this month to make final preparations.

He said as of now, no laboratories or examination halls were inundated.

"The department will continuously monitor the current situation, especially regarding the floods," he said.

According to the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, since the flood struck the state on Sunday, only 23 schools, including three secondary schools are being used as flood relief centres.

The three secondary schools used as relief centres are SMK Merchang, SMK Seri Payung, and SMK Seberang Marang.

Even though they are being used as relief centres, not all buildings are utilised as flood victims are only placed at one block at the respective schools, including at the school halls.
