Move towards establishment of NRD Fast Track Lane for Sabahans

KOTA KINABALU: A bipartisan committee should be formed over the establishment of National Registration Department's (NRD) Fast Track Lane and empowerment of the native court.

Parti Warisan's strategic communications (Stratcomm) unit associate member Chin Teck Ming said that the committee, which would comprise Warisan and Parti Bersatu Sabah, could help in providing a solution to the issuance of MyKad and birth certificates to genuine Sabahans.

Chin added that while the creation of the Fast Track Lane will eventually be decided by the Federal Government, it should not prevent both parties from sitting down and coming out with a consensus on the matter.

"The consensus, which is reached through such a committee, will then be submitted to the Prime Minister and Home Minister for consideration and implementation," he said.

Recently, Parti Bersatu Sabah's supreme council member Datuk William Majimbun supported Warisan Kota Belud member of parliament's Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis on the establishment of Fast Track Lane and to empower the Native Court.

Chin said Warisan also agreed with Majimbun's views on the preliminary stage, which should include the clear distinction of those eligible for the Fast Track Lane, the nature of empowerment to be accorded to the Native Court, and the transparency of this initiative.

"We would like to emphasise that the Fast Track Lane proposal is only relevant to the Late MyKad applications and that this initiative should not be permitted to usurp the High Court of Sabah's authority with regards to the Late Birth Certificate applications especially through its Mobile Court.

"There should also be specific measures to prevent abuse by individuals exercising their duties under the aegis of Native Court; and under no circumstances the Native Court will be allowed to supersede the High Court of Sabah's authority in relation to the Late MyKad application."

Meanwhile, the Wira Warisan chief Terrence Au said that the bipartisan committee is not for political mileage, but as a symbol of political maturity.

He added even if PBS wants to lead and submit the consensus reached by the committee to the Prime Minister, Wira Warisan has no problem with that because what matters most is for them to solve as many issues in Sabah as possible.

"And perhaps, Wira Warisan can also work together with PBS on the education and healthcare issues in Sabah," he said.
