Kelantan's monsoon delight: Zauyah's inspiring 'Putu Halba'

TUMPAT: When monsoon season strikes, stalls selling Kelantan delicacy 'putu halba' will be spotted almost everywhere along the roadside throughout the state.

One person who never misses selling 'putu halba' is Zauyah Deraman, a disabled woman from Kampung Ana. She has been selling 'putu halba' in front of her home for three years.

Before, she used to sell it with her sister's help, but now, her own family —her husband, Mohamad Abdul Rahman Yah, and daughter, Siti Ainul Hanan Faqihah help her.

"We started the stall when floods hit some Kelantan districts last week. Our 'putu halba' is different from others because we use my late mother's recipe.

I know it's hard for me to cook and pack 'putu halba' with my disability, but it doesn't stop me from helping my family make money. With my husband and childrens' support, I feel stronger to work," said the 38-year-old mom of four.

Zauyah, who has had disabilities since birth, doesn't mind working hard as long as her family is happy.

"My 38-year-old husband and nine-year-old Ainul help me at the stall every day. We sell about 15kg, which is more than 50 packets of 'putu halba' in a day.

I sell three pieces for RM2. The main ingredients in 'putu halba' are cassava and palm sugar."
