Batu Maung building collapse: Worker who died was a kind man, say employer, good friend

BAYAN LEPAS: The company which had hired one of the three Bangladeshi construction workers who died when a building under construction collapsed near the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) in Batu Maung last night, will manage his body, including sending it back to the South Asian nation.

The company representative, who only wanted to be known as Nor, said the worker has been identified as Saiful, 29.

She, however, said the company, based in Puchong, Selangor, needed to adhere to the standard operating procedure set by the authorities before repatriating the body.

"We received information about the collapse last night and I and another company representative immediately came from Selangor to find out more before being informed that a company employee was involved in the incident.

"So far, only one employee is involved in the incident and we are all saddened because he was a very kind and gentle person with everyone," she told newsmen when met at the Penang Hospital Forensic Unit.

Nor said Saiful's family in Bangladesh had been informed about the incident.

"We hope they will be strong," she added.

She said the company had sent a number of workers, including Saiful, to Penang to carry out work on the project in Batu Maung recently.

She added that Saiful had been working with the construction company for the past five years and every month the bachelor never failed to send money to his family in Bangladesh.

"Before being sent here (Batu Maung), the deceased had worked in Kuantan and Terengganu under our company. He was a very kind and hardworking person and even a gentle person in his conversation and personality," she said.

Nor said Saiful and all the foreigners working in the company had insurance and accreditation cards from the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

Meanwhile, Saiful's countryman Tayabur Rahman, 30, said he had lost a good friend.

"I did not expect him to go this way. Saiful was very kind. For the past five years, we often shared stories about our life and families back home," he said.

Earlier today, police confirmed that three people died while two others were seriously injured when the building collapsed.

Two of the three died at the scene while the other died at the hospital.

The two injured were being treated at the Penang Hospital.
