National Digital ID, a new facility for online transactions

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today became the first person in the country to sign up for the National Digital Identity facility

Also known as Digital ID, the facility under the National Registration Department is a form of digital identification and self-verification that can be used by the people when making transaction online.

It was also previously said the facility may enable the government to provide and implement targeted subsidies to the intended recipients.

As of today, the government has yet to release details on how the people in the country can register for the facility.

It is said the Digital ID, when in place, will not be replacing the MyKad identification card system and that it is a secure and trusted digital information platform.

During the tabling of the 2024 Budget in October this year, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, announced that the government would expedite the development of the Digital ID digital self-identification and verification system, which was first announced back in 2021.

The following month, Anwar announced RM80 million in allocation for the accelerate the development of the initiative.

The prime minister, at the time, said the facility was expected to be operational in three months.

Anwar had also announced that Mimos Bhd would spearhead the implementation of the development of the initiative.

The development of the Digital ID is among the efforts undertaken by the government to accelerate digital transformation in the public sector.
