Najib pursuing postgraduate studies in prison - Shafee

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib is applying to pursue postgraduate studies while serving his sentence.

Najib's lawyer, Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah said the former has already written some research for his postgraduate studies based on several pieces of advice given.

"His assistant will also bring him reading materials to read during visits, however, the materials will be filtered as not any materials can be brought in. (And) this makes me happy that at least he is doing something and the mind is not idle," he said during the Keluar Sekejap podcast hosted by former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan, today.

Asked whether he often visits Najib, Shafee said he made an attempt to see the former Pekan MP at least once a week.

He also denied claims made by certain quarters that Najib was not serving his sentence due to several social media posts made despite being in prison.

"I visit him every week, sometimes every two weeks and every time in court (during trial), I try to sit down and have lunch with him, just to have conversations.

"He (Najib) is also serving his sentence in prison. However, he is isolated from everyone else due to security aspects.

"This is because anything can happen if he is placed with others," he added.

In March, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that Najib had no access to gadgets while imprisoned, despite numerous postings on his social media accounts.
