KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian man who appeared in a video by an Israeli influencer expressing support for Israel has been detained earlier today.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspect is a 36-year-old man named 'Victor' from Johor.

The police obtained a remand order for three days until Dec 8 at the Johor Baru Magistrate Court earlier today, he said adding that the case is being handled by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit, Law and Prosecution Division of Bukit Aman CID.

"The case is still at the investigation stage hence the police advise the people to refrain from commenting or create speculations which would affect the probe," he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Yesterday, New Straits Times reported of a viral video which created outrage amongst netizens about a Chinese man claiming to be Malaysian, expressing support for Israel and claims that Malaysians are targets of extreme Arab terrorism and propaganda.

The six-minute video clip which showcases the "Malaysian" man, Victor Yong Jeng Ong, was created by an Israeli @HananyaNaftali, who shared the video.

Hananya wrote a caption on his video saying: "A brave Malaysian tells the truth about the anti-Israel lies in Malaysia. Israel and Malaysia will one day have diplomatic relations – once radicalism is uprooted."
