MyAqsa will assist inquiry into war crimes

KUALA LUMPUR: MyAqsa Foundation Malaysia will assist the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel in regard to the war crimes committed by the Israelis.

Its legal team chair Prof Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad said it would submit necessary documents to the body, established through a resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council on May 27, 2021.

"We will provide similar evidence which was earlier submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC), comprising evidence and testimony against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"We will also be working closely with the network of international lawyers, academics and legal scholars on finding legal solutions to the current issue on ceasefire (in Gaza)," he told the New Straits Times.

On the evidence submitted to the ICC last month, he said MyAQSA had not heard any assertive effort made by the prosecutor's office in investigating the crime alleged against Israelis.

The foundation is the amicus curiae (friend of the court) to the ICC as part of efforts to help establish the court's jurisdiction over possible action against Israel's war crimes in Palestine.

"We have already submitted the evidence comprising documents, pictures and videos, on crimes against humanity committed by Israel (to the ICC), based on evidence provided by witnesses and officials in Palestine.

"Our part as an NGO (non-governmental organisation) is to keep on putting pressure on ICC and that there should not be any double standards investigating the alleged crime."

Rahmat said diplomatic dialogues would have to continue as the legal remedy under the United Nations Security Council's resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza did not work.

He said this included gathering peace brokers in the Middle East as they played a vital role in the matter.

"At the end of the day, what is more important is the humanity and that people's lives are saved and this is something that the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation), perhaps, can broker the peace talk without involving the superpowers."
