10-vehicle pile-up on NKVE leaves lorry driver dead; witnesses sought

PETALING JAYA: A 10-vehicle pile-up on the New Klang Valley Expressway yesterday left a lorry driver dead and several other motorists injured.

Deputy district police chief Superintendent M. Hussin Sollehuddin Zolkifly said the incident, which involved two lorries and eight cars, occurred about 10.50pm at Km457.9 of the NKVE.

He said the initial investigations revealed that the 24-year-old driver of a Nissan Almera had lost control of his vehicle and crashed it, causing several other vehicles to ram into it.

"Simultaneously, a Mercedes Benz lorry attempted to avoid the crash and was rear-ended by another lorry, a Volvo.

"The driver of the Volvo lorry became trapped and was confirmed dead at the crash site," he said in a statement.

Hussin said that all the injured were taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for medical treatment.

The body of the lorry driver was taken to the forensics department of the same hospital for post-mortem examination.

Hussin urged witnesses to come forward to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

They can contact investigating officer Inspector Mohammad Najib Mohd Azaman at 012-3526147 or the nearest police station.
