Kampung Serongga youths to the rescue in relocating flood victims, motorcycles

PASIR MAS: Despite being affected by the flood that hit Kampung Serongga, here, the residents, especially the youths, do not mind braving waist-deep waters to assist those in need.

Mohamad Izzat Pead, 20, said since this morning, he and two of his friends have been helping to relocate the villagers' motorcycles from the village to higher ground due to the rising waters of Sungai Teresek since yesterday evening.

"Usually, when floods occur, the residents help each other. If someone needs assistance in moving their belongings, motorcycles, or residents, we will lend a hand.

"I, along with my friends, helped load motorcycles onto a boat and transported them about 500 metres away from the flood-affected area. Since this morning, I've assisted in relocating four motorcycles," he said when met here today.

Mohamad Izzat, who is self-employed, said Kampung Serongga has been affected by floods twice within less than a month.

"A few days ago, we were able to return home, but since yesterday, the water has started rising again, causing me, my parents, and six other family members to move to the temporary relief centre at SK Sri Kiambang for the second time in less than a month," he said.

Raihan Mohamad, 24, also assisted in relocating affected residents to the centre.

"In addition to my mother and other family members, I also helped move other residents who requested assistance.

"Today's weather is good and clear, with no rain, but the water level is rising. That's why many residents don't want to take any risks, so they quickly move to the centre. I help relocate those who need assistance," said the self-employed individual.

Meanwhile, a check by Bernama in Kampung Serongga found that in addition to residents moving on their own, they were also assisted by policemen from the Pasir Mas district police headquarters in relocating flood victims to the shelter at SK Sri Kiambang. – BERNAMA
