Drop in flood victims in Pahang, six rivers exceed danger level

KUANTAN: Pahang's flood situation is displaying improvement as the number of evacuees in two districts recorded a drop despite persistent gloomy weather.

As of 4pm today, 503 victims from 130 families are seeking shelter at 12 flood relief centres (PPS) in Raub and Lipis compared to 700 victims at 8am today.

A state Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman said the situation remained unchanged in Raub, which has 463 victims from 118 families housed at nine PPS while Lipis recorded a drop with only 40 victims from 12 families at three PPS.

"Promising weather in Lipis today saw the water in several flood-hit areas begin to recede. Only three PPS remain open after three others were closed in stages at noon today.

"Nine PPS in Raub are still operating. The flood situation in Raub has improved and more people will be allowed to return home later today," he said.

Meanwhile, six rivers in five districts in Pahang have exceeded the danger level at 4pm today following continuous rain since Dec 24.

The water level at Sg Tanum in Chegar Perah, Lipis registered a reading of 99.48m compared to 98m which had been set as the danger level.

The other five rivers are Sungai Tembeling in Jerantut recorded 106.88m(danger level 106m), Sungai Luit in Maran recorded 27.96m( danger level 27m) and Sungai Pahang in Pekan registered a level of 15.55m(danger level 14.90).

Sungai Pukin and Sungai Keratong in Rompin registered 47.24m and 11.60m respectively, compared to 45m and 11m which had been set as the danger level.

Earlier, it was reported that the third day of floods in Pahang saw a total of 698 people being evacuated to relief centres.
