Three checkpoints in Kelantan operating as usual despite rising Golok river

KOTA BARU:The three Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complexes in Kelantan which are not affected by the recent floods continue operating as usual.

The ICQS complexes are in Rantau Panjang, Bukit Bunga and Pengkalan Kubor.

However, the number of Malaysians crossing over to the Sungai Golok sub-province and other southern provinces dropped slightly dropped since last month.

An Immigration Department spokesman said the rising of Golok river since the first wave of floods last month and the second wave last week, did not cause any impact to their operations.

"Our operations at the three checkpoints are running smoothly and our counters are also open as usual.

"But there is a slight drop in the number of visitors using the checkpoints," said the spokesman.

Thai trader Zainun Mohamad said few Malaysians had visited her business since last month.

"Sungai Golok sub-province was not hit by the recent floods but l believe many Malaysians are afraid to visit as they fear of being stranded in Thailand," she said.

The 56-year-old who operates a shop in Sungai Golok town, hopes the situation would return to normal soon.

A survey at Rantau Panjang today showed that there were fewer motorists using the checkpoints as the Golok river continued rising following heavy rains last night.
