Jakoa advises Orang Asli not to go out alone to prevent tiger attacks

KOTA BARU: The Orang Asli in several settlements in Gua Musang are told to avoid going out alone to prevent unwanted incidents following the death of two men in the latest tiger attacks in the area.

Kelantan/Terengganu Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) director Zarina Razlan said if possible, they are advised to go out in groups.

"They must take this precaution for their own safety. They still remain at their homes and no one has moved to other areas so far," she said when contacted.

She added Jakoa realises that the Orang Asli would face some problem in terms of food supply if they did not go out.

Therefore, she said Jakoa would assist them, especially those who have been affected by the series of tiger attacks in Gua Musang recently.

"For a start, we will be sending them food baskets soon," she said.

Series of tiger attacks have been reported in Gua Musang district of late and since last month, three men were mauled by tigers.

Two of them were from Indonesia and Myanmar while another was an Orang Asli.

The attacks occured between Wednesday (Oct 4) and Saturday (Nov 11) at Pos Pasik and Meranto.

Following the incidents, the state Wildlife department has set up traps and camera traps to help them to capture the tigers.

The department also has identified the diminishing forest area as one of the contributing factors to the heightened aggressiveness of tigers which mauled the victims in Gua Musang.
