Picket for Palestine: Demonstrators set up tents near US embassy, vow to remain for 6 days

KUALA LUMPUR: Participants of the 'Piket Demi Palestin' (Picket for Palestine) demonstration will set up tents some 500 metres away from the United States embassy in Jalan Tun Razak.

This was after they were told by the police not to set up any tents as part of their six-day protest.

Former Batu member of parliament Tian Chua, who is also a senior member of the Solidariti Palestin secretariat, said he hoped the authorities would respect the protesters' right to demonstrate.

"We know that the Malaysian government has a sympathetic stand in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.

"So we hope that the police would also respect the decision of the government, which is consistent with the policy and allow us to continue our picket," he told reporters in front of The Icon Tower here tonight.

Around 100 people had earlier marched from Menara TH Tun Razak to the US Embassy as part of the protest.

The protest was held as a sign of solidarity with Palestine and in response to the US government's veto of the United Nations' efforts to push for a ceasefire in Gaza.
