Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme to continue

KUALA LUMPUR: The Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme, which is set to expire on Dec 31, will be continued.

The Energy Transition and Public Utilities Ministry, in a statement, said it is reviewing and enhancing the implementation and operational methods of the programme.

"This ministry is reviewing the premium rates to make them more competitive and appealing, reviewing the GET subscription offers to allow for longer subscription periods and establishing methods to prioritise subscriptions for loyal existing GET customers to renew their subscriptions.

"Details regarding offers, implementation, and subscription methods for this program will be communicated by the ministry shortly after the completion of reviews and assessments of this programme," it said.

The programme, initiated in 2022, is part of the government's ongoing commitment through the ministry to support the nation's aspirations towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

Through the programme, consumers subscribing to GET will receive electricity supply from Renewable Energy Supplies (RES) generated by operational solar and hydropower plants.

Consumers who subscribe will also receive a certificate verifying that the electricity supply is sourced from RES through Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificates (mREC) registered with an international certification body.

In February, the government, via the Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional Bhd opened subscriptions for GET with a quota of 6,600GWh at a premium rate of 21.8 sen/kWh, benchmarked against the retail pricing standards of green electricity supply in neighbouring countries offering similar products.
