Selangor MB backs Selangor Sultan's call for respect in Islamic affairs

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has affirmed his support for the Sultan of Selangor's decree urging the people, particularly non-Muslims, to respect and refrain from meddling in matters of Islamic affairs.

Amirudin in a statement said the authority over Islamic affairs, which is a special prerogative of each state that falls under the Sultan, should be comprehended without any allegations that could lead to misinterpretations causing unnecessary unrest.

"As an experienced legal practitioner, such views and comments have no necessity for consideration, and there is no importance to raise them as a discussion topic to begin with.

"The Beruas member of Parliament (Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham), being an experienced political figure and having formerly served as the Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker, should re-evaluate his capacity of discourse, especially concerning issues involving Islamic affairs, particularly considering the controversies he has previously stirred on similar grounds," Amirudin said

This comes after the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, yesterday reminded non-Muslims to show respect and refrain from interfering in matters related to Islamic affairs in the country.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was responding to a proposal made by Ngeh, advising the government to appoint experts from non-Muslim communities to assist the Special Committee to Study the Competence of the State Legislative Assembly in Enacting Islamic Laws established earlier this month.

Ngeh was quoted as suggesting this step to consider the perspectives of non-Muslims before making any changes to the law.

He also said the act by Ngeh burdened his party, which is currently at its best phase to jointly pursue the agenda of a Malaysia Madani through a clear and conclusive unity government that prioritises Islam at the highest level.

"This demonstrates the commitment of Pakatan Harapan through a strategic combination with Barisan Nasional to serve as a stronger defence for Islam compared to any previous entities," he said.

He added that the consistent and firm efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in addressing matters related to Islam and Malay affairs needed to be respected and taken with wisdom and understanding by every political member, particularly MPs.

"Indeed, the decree of the Sultan of Selangor is timely and should serve as a full stop for any politician who fails to grasp the political realism of Malaysia comprehensively."
