'Irresponsible politicians will continue scheming' [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Political analysts believe that attempts to overthrow the government, such as the Sheraton Move, London Move and Dubai Move, will continue as long as Malaysian politicians remain irresponsible.

International Islamic University Malaysia Political Science Department Assistant Professor Dr Lau Zhe Wei said such moves would not happen in a politically mature and healthy democracy.

He said the anti-party hopping constitutional amendment enacted in October 2022 had also proven to be ineffective.

"This year, five members of parliament from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) pledged their support for the unity government.

"Yes, they remained in Bersatu, theoretically and legally, but they pledged support for the government.

"Likewise, government MPs can also pledge support for the opposition to overthrow the government. Theoretically, it is possible. Whether this can materialise is another story.

"But as long as politicians fail to see that such moves are undemocratic, these attempts will continue to happen," he said.

Dr Mazlan Ali, a political analyst from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, said changing a government through any means other than an election was a waste of time.

He said the opposition should be constructive by acting as a check-and-balance mechanism to ensure a healthy democracy.

He also believed that Anwar's administration was unlikely to be threatened given its two-thirds majority in Parliament.

The unity government's formation, he added, was also done upon the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"The opposition can play its role well through healthy competition, such as by criticising government policies. This is what democracy should be.

"Be a constructive opposition. Play your role by criticising ineffective policies and the like.

"Wait until the end of the term (in 2027) to effect change via the general election.

"The people will be angry if the government had failed them.

"But, give Anwar a chance to effect change.

"Surely, we don't want another backdoor government," he said.
