Kuala Terengganu family seek refuge at shelter as house succumbs to waves

KUALA TERENGGANU: A family of six, including an elderly couple, are still sheltering in a temporary relief centre (PPS) since last Tuesday after part of their house in Kampung Mengabang Telong, Batu Rakit, here, collapsed due to waves.

Mustapa Ibrahim, 81, and his wife, Hamidah Hassan, 68, along with their son Hamimah Mustapa, 41, and three grandchildren between the ages of 10 and 17 have not been allowed to return home due to the high tide phenomenon.

Civil Defence Forces Operational Disaster Management Division deputy director Major (PA) Mohd Hafiz Asikin said the family was asked to remain at the Wakaf Tengah, Kuala Nerus PPS for their safety.

"We will only allow Mustapa and his family to return home after the weather, including high tides and big waves has died down.

"Even though the family asked for permission to return fo their home, we believe that the waves and high tide phenomenon along with strong winds are still happening, therefore they are allowed to stay at PPS," he said when contacted by BH.

The family is the only ones still sheltering in the PPS and the Wakaf Tengah PPS is the only PPS still in operation in Kuala Nerus, as of 8pm last night.
