During spring tides, the bore surges up at 18 kilometres per hour, generating awe-inspiring waves reaching heights of up to three metres. Fun fact - renowned author W. Somerset Maugham almost drowned during the 'benak' and he describes this near-death experience in his short story, "The Yellow Streak".
