(Updated) Covid-19 cases in Penang on downward trend

GEORGE TOWN: Covid-19 cases in Penang are on the downward trend, from three digits to two digits.

The figure was obtained from the final two weeks of December last year until this week.

State Health, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said, of the total cases, 96.7 per cent involved those with mild symptoms that only required self-monitoring at home.

He said the trend was a result of the school holidays and the Christmas celebrations last month.

"Covid-19 cases in Penang have decreased from three digits to two digits, with more than 90 per cent only involve cases with mild symptoms that require self-monitoring.

"They are not serious cases," he said today.

Gooi advised the public to take precautions by wearing a face mask and maintaining physical distance.

In a separate development, Gooi said a total of 233 cases of dengue fever were recorded in Penang for the second Epidemiological Week (ME2) for the period from Jan 7 until Jan 13.

He said the Seberang Prai Tengah (SPT) district recorded the highest cumulative number of cases at 93 cases.

"The northeast district recorded a cumulative number of 44 cases, southwest district (41), Seberang Prai Selatan (SPS) district (44) and Seberang Prai Utara (SPU) district (11).

"For the number of cases for ME2, the northeast district recorded 21 cases, southwest (17), SPU (five), SPT (44) and SPS (23)," he added.

He added that for ME1, the northeast district recorded 23 cases, southwest (24), SPU (six), SPT (49) and SPS (21).

"With this data, it shows that all districts experienced a decrease in cases for ME2.

"Meanwhile, for the cumulative epidemic of 2024, as many as 30 localities were detected in ME3 (until Jan 16) involving seven in the northeast district, southwest (five), SPU (one), SPT (14) and SPS (three)," he said.
