Data security, registration uncertainty and lack of perceived benefits deter Padu registration

KUALA LUMPUR: Concerns over data security, uncertainty about the registration process, being too busy, and a lack of its perceived benefits are just some of the reasons why many Malaysians are hesitant to register with the Central Database Hub (Padu).

Andrew Goh, 29 said he would only register once the government has the RON95 petrol subsidy programme ready.

"I have no plan to register because based on what I heard it will not benefit us much, especially the M40 group.

"Once the RON95 petrol subsidy mechanism is ready then I will register," said the market researcher.

Goh also has some concerns over data security.

"Even our data from MySejahtera was leaked before so yes it is a concern (data security).. if I sign up, I do it knowing that a data leak could happen.

"But there is nothing we can do," he said.

Nur Amalina Mohamed Salleh, 33, said she was preoccupied with work and had yet to understand the registration process.

"For me the initiative is good because at least the government can identify the group that really needs support instead of relying on the B40, M40 and T20 classification.

"But I have yet to register and when I google, I can't find any form or link to register" said the digital communication officer.

A housewife who only wanted to be known as Julie, 35, said she too was clueless on the programme.

"I haven't registered because I have no clue what is it for.

"When I first received a text urging me to register, I was so offended, why am I being forced to register on this?

"I thought the message was from a scammer," said the housewife, adding that she had no interest in signing up yet.

Nur Adillah Maaz, 43, said she was unclear about the reasons Malaysians were being asked to register on Padu.

"I don't understand what is the function.. I thought it was only for civil servants," said the lecturer.

Only 1,367,324 people have registered for Padu as of Monday.

This figure accounts for approximately 4.7 per cent of Malaysians aged 18 and above, while the system targets enrollment from around 29.8 million people.

According to the latest updates from the Department of Statistics , only five states have surpassed 100,000 registrations after 20 days since the Padu system was launched.

These include Selangor with 262,677 registrants, Sarawak (164,179), Johor (160,433), Perak (121,032), and Sabah (110,087).

Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Jan 2, Padu consolidates data from various government agencies under one roof.

It also aims to improve the delivery of government services.
