Fuel subsidy will not be abolished, Fahmi clarifies

PUTRAJAYA: The government has denied claims on the introduction of new taxes, as well as the abolishment of RON 95 petrol and diesel subsidies this year.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this was following a graphic circulated on social media alleging this.

"Based on the graphic, RON 95 petrol and diesel subsidies will be abolished in the first half of the year, when the matter has not been discussed by the cabinet," he told a press conference at the ministry today.

Fahmi, who is also the unity government's spokesman, also denied claims on new taxes to be implemented this year.

The graphic among others listed a five per cent electricity tariff hike for M40 income earners and 10 per cent high value goods tax (HVGT) to be imposed this year.

He advised the public to be more careful in consuming information obtained online and verify them with credible sources.

He said he would seek help from the Finance Ministry in preparing frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) in clarifying the matter.
