Tok Mat: ICJ verdict is victory to Malaysia and countries supporting Palestinian cause

REMBAU: The verdict by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday is not only a victory for the Palestinians but also for Malaysia and other countries who want an end to the genocidal atrocities of the Israeli forces.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan hoped humanitarian aid can be brought into Gaza without restrictions following the interim verdict passed by the world court.

He said this will enable assistance to be provided to the Palestinian people who are currently suffering from hunger, which is seen as tactics being used by Israel to drive the people of Palestine out of Gaza.

"Yesterday, the ICJ issued interim measures in the case brought by South Africa against Israel under the Genocide Convention Act 1948.

"This is a step marking a victory for countries that want the genocidal atrocities committed by the Zionist regime of Israel in Gaza to end immediately.

"Malaysia, therefore, welcomes such a decision. We hope that Israel, a signatory to the Genocide Convention will comply with the decision made by the ICJ," he told reporters here today.

Reuters reported that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and to do more to help civilians.

The world court however stopped short of ordering a ceasefire as requested by the plaintiff, South Africa.

The report said that although such a ruling denied Palestinian hopes of a binding order to halt the war in Gaza, Hamas, nevertheless, said the ruling was an important development that contributed to isolating Israel and exposing its crimes in Gaza.

Mohamad said there were six interim measures set by the ICJ while waiting for a full trial.

"At the full trial at the ICJ on Feb 22, I will represent the Malaysian government to make a submission as a sign of support and hope that this case can be discussed later," he said.
