Man killed as car plunges into 7m-deep drainage canal on Iskandar Coastal Highway

JOHOR BARU: A man was killed when his Toyota Alphard veered off the road at the Iskandar Coastal Highway and plunged into a 7m-deep drainage canal, here, today.

Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Azmi Johar said following the emergency call placed by passers-by at 5.20am, a 14-member was despatched to the scene.

"The victim was found some 50m away from his vehicle which had turned turtle in the canal," Azmi said.

The rescuers ferried the victim out of the canal but he was pronounced dead at the scene by the accompanying health ministry medical assistants.

Azmi said as a precautionary measure, rescuers executed a sweeping task, where they walked shoulder-to-shoulder along the 10m-wide canal, to ensure there were no other victims.

It was established that the victim was alone in his car when the accident occurred.

The case is investigated by the Johor Baru (North) police district headquarters.

The victim's details are yet to be released by police at press time.

Despite the scene being cleared following the accident, a massive traffic jam was reported along the highway from Perling, here, towards the city centre.

The Alphard plunged into the canal, near the Tune Hotel, which is opposite the BMW Auto Bavaria Service Centre, located along the highway.
