7 PPS opened in Johor as floods hit state again

JOHOR BARU: The state has again been hit by floods, with seven temporary relief centres (PPS) now open in four districts.

More than 330 people are currently being housed at these centres in Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, Mersing and Kluang.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said there were two PPS each in Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi and Mersing and one in Kluang.

"The worst-hit district is Johor Baru with 234 victims from 45 families being housed at the Dewan Muafakat Lampung Cahaya and Dewan Kampung Sungai Tiram PPS.

"In Kota Tinggi, the two PPS are at SJKC New Kota and Dewan Pasak Indah. However, we are still trying to ascertain just how many people are being housed in those centres.

"Mersing has 52 victims from 11 families being housed at the SK Air Papan and SK Tenglu PPS. Meanwhile, in Kluang, we have 44 victims from 14 families at Dewan MPK Kahang," he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a "bad level" heavy rain warning for several areas in Johor. This is expected to last till Sunday.

MetMalaysia, in a statement, said the areas involved were Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru.

It also issued an alert level warning of continuous heavy rain till Sunday for Batu Pahat and Pontian, as well as Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang.
