Police open investigation against two over statements on National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation paper against two individuals over their statements concerning the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI).

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the case is being investigated by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), Criminal Investigation Department, Bukit Aman under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"The case is still under investigation and the public is advised to refrain from making any speculations that might disrupt the investigation process.

"The public also should be aware of and concerned about sensitive issues, especially those that relating to public and national security," he said in a statement today.

Previously, Beruas MP, Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, advised the government to appoint experts from non-Muslim communities to assist the Special Committee to Study the Competence of the State Legislative Assembly in Enacting Islamic Laws established earlier this month.

Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham was quoted as suggesting this step to consider the perspectives of non-Muslims before making any changes to the law.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, reminded non-Muslims to show respect and refrain from interfering in matters related to Islamic affairs in the country.

His Majesty, who also serves as the Malaysian National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) chairman, emphasised that the MKI has the mandate and responsibility to handle all matters concerning the Muslim community.

Ngeh's suggestion received reactions from various quarters, including Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

However, Ngeh has apologised for a proposal he made that interfered with Islamic affairs.

The former Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker withdrew and apologised for his statement on the proposal to advise the government to appoint experts from non-Muslim communities to assist the special committee to study the competence of the state legislative assembly in enacting Islamic laws.
