Anwar: Don't politicise anti-corruption enforcement, regardless of who's involved [NSTTV]

SEPANG: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for all parties not to politicise enforcement actions against those involved in corruption issues, especially involving big figures and former top leaders of the country.

The Prime Minister said corruption needs to be investigated and acted upon in the same way as dealing with corruption cases involving ordinary people.

"Why are issues like this politicised?

"If you have loyalty to a certain individual, that is your problem, if you have interest in any political parties, that's your problem.

"I am ready to face the risks (of strict action against big figures)," he said in a speech in conjunction with the launch of Prime Minister's Directive No.1 Year 2024, here, today.

The directive, named the National Good Governance Strengthening Movement (Gerakan Pemantapan Tatakelola Nasional) would involve forming a Special Cabinet Committee on National Good Governance by replacing the previous Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption.

Also present were the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali; Attorney General, Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh; Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner of Tan Sri Azam Baki and Auditor-General, Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi.

On Dec 23, MACC confirmed that they are investigating former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin for allegations of corruption and money laundering.

They had also seized Ilham Tower, a building owned by his family.

Also under investigation now are two former prime ministers where they would delve into the wealth supposedly amassed by the wife and children of one of the former leaders, a petroleum company's activities, and expenditures related to advertising.

Anwar added that he was aware that strict actions against big figures as well as the cancellation of direct negotiation contracts did not please certain parties.

However, he defended his actions as he said it is necessary for the sake of the country and it was his responsibility to ensure that abuse of power and corruption were eradicated.
