Johor flood crisis: Over 1,800 seek shelter at 41 relief centres amid 15-hour continuous rain

JOHOR BARU: There are 1,805 flood victims seeking shelter at 41 relief centres in Johor after continuous heavy rain for the past 15 hours, today.

Kota Tinggi is the worst flood-hit district with 18 relief centres housing 759 victims from 252 families, followed by Johor Baru with 10 centres and 532 victims from 155 families.

Kluang has 11 centres with 432 victims (149 families) while Kulai's one relief centre has 62 victims (16 families) and Segamat's relief centre houses 20 victims from five families.

Eight of the 14 main rivers in the state are on red-alert with the highest level measuring 20.10m, while one is on orange alert and the remaining on yellow.

Meanwhile, 37 low-lying and flood-prone areas sustained road damages and landslides, which will require an estimated RM30 million for repair works.

State Flood Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said despite the worsened situation, it is still under control as the disaster management committee had made preplanned and organised evacuation and mitigation preparations almost a year in advance.

Johor police chief Datuk Mamarul Zaman Mamat assured flood victims that police will conduct frequent crime prevention patrols at their housing estates, which they were evacuated from after water level rose.

There have been no casualties reported today and police are on standby to help all the flood-committee authorities.

Kamarul Zaman asked for the people to continue adhering to the relevant authority's instructions, and to seek help whenever needed.

Additionally, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi visited flood-victims at relief centres in Kota Tinggi.

He called for the people to stay strong in these challenging times, while remaining vigilant as heavy rain is forecast to continue into the night.

As of 7.30pm, the rain has reduced to a drizzle, although it is sporadically raining in certain areas of the district.

Temperatures remained low at 27 Celsius.
