Bersatu, Pas condemn Beruas MP's torching but chide him for blaming PN

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu and Pas have condemned the attack on DAP Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Khoo Ham, but chastised him for implicating Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the arson.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has demanded Ngeh to apologise for the remarks he made during a press conference following the incident.

"I would like to remind everyone that when it comes to Islamic religion, it should not be confused with unrelated external parties, because if it is, Muslims will rise up without needing to be incited. As a result, rather than levelling allegations, he should apologise and repent without blaming others.

"All parties need to be cautious in expressing any views, especially on sensitive matters, to avoid causing harm to the hard-earned peace, which is not built overnight," he said in a statement today.

Earlier today, New Straits Times sighted a clip where PN Youth chief lodged a police report over Ngeh's allegation where the latter alluded that the Opposition criticism towards him had provoked the attack.

Yesterday, it was reported that Ngeh believed that the suspected arson at his house in Ayer Tawar this morning could be due to the media statement he issued on Dec 28 last year.

The media statement, said Ngeh, was in response to the suggestion by the federal government to form a committee headed by former Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi to study the conflicts between shariah laws and the Federal Constitution, in which the 11 members of the committee are all Muslims.

Ngeh proposed that non-Muslim Constitutional experts be appointed to the committee so that non-Muslims' perspectives on the provisions of the Federal Constitution are taken into account before any changes to the law are made.
