UTP secures multi-million software from Baker Hughes to enhance petroleum geoscience programmes

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has been awarded the JewelSuite Subsurface Modeling package software licences valued at US$3.4 million (RM15.6 million) from Baker Hughes that is poised to revolutionise education and research in the field of petroleum geoscience.

UTP said in a statement that the cutting-edge software specialised in constructing the industry's most accurate 3D subsurface models and its functionalities are comprehensive, ranging from detailing intricate fault systems to addressing unconformities and salt intrusions.

It said the software's advanced scenario planning capabilities eliminate uncertainty, providing a reliable evaluation of complex geology that establishes a robust foundation for reservoir architecture and provides class-leading subsurface insights.

"The software will serve as an incentive for advancing research initiatives at UTP. Within research clusters such as Integrated Reservoir Modelling, the JewelSuite Subsurface Modelling package enables experimentation and exploration.

"Its contribution to Reservoir Characterisation will enhance UTP's position at the forefront of technological advancement in subsurface modelling," it said.

UTP Geoscience Chair, Dr Khairul Arifin Mohd Noh, said the university is honoured to receive the software as it will significantly enhance the learning experience of the institution's petroleum geoscience graduate students.

"Through hands-on exposure, students gain invaluable practical insights, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. This better equips them to navigate challenges in the oil and gas industry, making their educational journey more enriching and industry relevant," he said.

Khairul Arifin said by working closely with industrial partners like Baker Hughes, UTP can provide a robust and competitive environment to prepare the students for impactful contributions to the oil and gas industry.

"This collaboration exemplifies a shared commitment to fostering excellence in petroleum geoscience education and research," he added.

Meanwhile, Baker Hughes Malaysia Country Director Nazirah Mohd Bashir said the company is proud to support UTP with the student education and development plan and is a testament to its 'care' value towards the community.

Baker Hughes Digital Regional Manager APAC (Asia–Pacific) Khaidir Rahmatsyah said the company is excited to provide software that will support UTP research and educational programmes.

"It is important that we collaborate with universities like UTP to help train top talents and gain the necessary practical experience by using JewelSuite software," he said. –BERNAMA
