Tony Pua: 'Police are wasting time investigating me'

KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua has described the investigation into his alleged seditious remark as a waste of time.

He said he had gone through the five postings that he made on Facebook over and over again for elements of sedition.

"I have read the 'postings' over and over again, but I did not see any elements where it has to be investigated under the Sedition Act.

"I hope the police will carry out a thorough investigation that is also swift and short and refute all the allegations made by certain parties out there," he said after having his statement recorded at the federal police headquarters here today.

He arrived at Bukit Aman at 12.51pm with his lawyer Haijan Omar to meet with the investigating officer from the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) to have his statement recorded at 1.13pm.

He was then seen leaving Bukit Aman with Norhaijan at around 2.30pm.

Pua said that he is made to understand that the investigation follows a police report made by an Umno representative in Johor, but he was not informed who the individual was.

"Disappointed, not really, but this is Umno's attitude, it's like that lah.

"But I felt that it was a bit of a waste of time. It was a waste of time for the police because they have to investigate something like this; wasting my time although it is ok because I am already retired.

"I do not see how my postings can be deemed as seditious," he said.

Earlier, he said the police investigation today focused on the five postings that he made on his personal Facebook account and he answered all sixty questions that were asked by the investigating officer.

Pua said police also instructed him to surrender his personal computer used to produce the five postings on Facebook.

He said he would do it soon as he did not have it with him earlier.

The USJT investigating officer also instructed him to reveal the password for his personal Facebook account, he said.

Meanwhile, when contacted, federal police's CID confirmed that it had recorded Tony Pua's statement today.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain issued a statement informing that Tony Pua will be investigated on charges of making an alleged derogatory statement towards the Royal institution regarding the decision to reduce the prison sentence and fine of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
