BN respects Pardons Board Decision, supports actions under rule of law

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) respects the decision of the Pardons Board in accordance with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution with regards to Datuk Seri Najib Razak's sentence reduction.

Its secretary-general, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir in a statement following the coalition's supreme council meeting today said it also supports all actions to be taken in compliance with the rule of law as stipulated in the Federal Constitution following the Pardons Board decision on the partial pardon of Najib.

This echoed Umno's statement on Feb 3 that it respected the absolute rights of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah over the Federal Territories Pardons Board's decision in the case of Najib.

The Pardons Board on Friday halved Najib's 12-year jail term to six years.

Najib was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after being found guilty of abuse of power, breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

Meanwhile, in the same meeting, Zambry said a special committee has been agreed to be established to coordinate all the programmes in regards to the coalition's anniversary celebrations in June.

"In light of the upcoming 50th golden jubilee, the Supreme Council has unanimously agreed to establish a special committee to coordinate all programs in conjunction with the milestone celebration scheduled for June.

"During the Supreme Council meeting, several key appointments were also confirmed, including the appointment of Datuk Rozi Mamat as the Terengganu BN committee chairman, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi as the Johor BN committee chairman and also the appointment of the Division coordination committee chairman under Article 24(A)."

Zambry said, the supreme council also extended heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia on his proclamation as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"The supreme council hopes that His Majesty's reign would usher in a prosperous and thriving era for Malaysia."

"The supreme council also acknowledged and expressed gratitude on the completion of the tenure of His Royal Highness Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong."
