MCA leader urges Loke to reveal name of minister in tailgating incident

KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke should reveal the name of the minister whose official vehicle allegedly tailgated an ambulance on the North-South Expressway (NSE).

MCA deputy youth chief Chong Yew Chuan said as a cabinet member in charge of the transport portfolio in the unity government, Loke, needed to take firm action on such matters related to road safety.

He said the minister should be highlighting the unity government's commitment to defend the rule of law, while preserving the good name of the federal government.

"The act of a minister's official vehicle closely following an ambulance is not only a very wrong example, but also involves dangerous driving and poses a risk to other road users.

"Loke, as the Transport Minister, should take the matter seriously and take firm action to show his commitment to preserving road safety and the safety of road users," Chong said in a statement today.

He added that the government would be considered as supporting dangerous driving without regard for the safety of others if Loke did not express his position on the case.

"If the Transport Ministry remains silent, where is the moral position of the unity government in the future to ask the people to drive carefully; or to take action against users who do not comply with road rules? This is a very important issue and cannot be left alone."

He said since some of the details of the official vehicle, including its registration number have been displayed on social media, it would make it easier for Loke to get more details, including the identity of the minister involved.

Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported about photographs of a luxury multipurpose vehicle bearing an emblem with the word 'Menteri' (Minister) beating a traffic jam by tailgating an ambulance on the NSE.

In the screenshot of a Facebook post, which has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), a social media user claimed the incident allegedly took place along the North-South Expressway between Simpang Pulai and Tapah in Perak.

It triggered the wrath of social media users.
